You are not your thoughts.

Hi friends! Welcome back! Are you ready for some insight on your thoughts, especially the random ones that show up out of the blue?

I was thinking about one of my goals for this year, and this little thought crept in my head. It wasn’t really a negative thought. It was more of a sarcastic one, like a person looking at your over their readers behind their giant newspaper section of the gossip column saying:

Really? You are really going to do that this time or just saying you’ll do it?!

Well, friends, that’s when my teacher Brooke Castillo’s words came to mind:

You are in charge of your thoughts.

Brooke Castillo of The Life Coach School

So that’s what inspired me to write this short and sweet blog for you today.

Practice these (replacement) thoughts to keep in your long-term memory so they can come to your rescue when random thoughts show up like a bunch of clouds floating by.

  1. I am not my thoughts.
  2. I create my thoughts.
  3. I choose to think what I want to think about.
  4. I am in charge of my thoughts.
  5. I can stand back and look at my thoughts with curiosity.
  6. My thoughts are harmless.
  7. I don’t have to judge my thoughts.

That’s it! All you have to do is acknowledge your thoughts, be curious about them and even name them at times to gain power over them. They are nothing but a repetition of your past self’s practice thoughts. They are harmless. They do not hold any power over you until you allow them, and you allow your thoughts to hold power over you if you react to an emotion brought on by your thoughts. For example:

  • Thought: I am not gonna finish painting the house. What’s the point?
  • Feeling: Defeated
  • Action: You don’t plan and schedule to paint the house.
  • Result: you actually did not finish (like a self-fulfilling prophecy).

To really get ahead of thoughts that tend to show up like uninvited guests in the middle of the night, you’ve got to practice and prepare a “defense” ahead of time. You’ve go to have a script in place ahead of time so that you can be prepared for random thoughts that will try to sway you away from your goals, plans, or scheduled task. (No, you don’t have to take that appointment. I mean, you are pretty tired, aren’t you?!) Does this sound familiar? Yes. I’ve canceled many things just because I was all of a sudden tired. HA!

Ignore the sudden & random cloud of thoughts!

You got this friend. Don’t let your past thoughts deter you from your current goal and the transformation that’s going to take place in you in the near future.

Be well,
