Advice from your favorite Life Coach!
Still haven’t made any decisions on which goals to pursue this year? Don’t know how to go about selecting which area of your life to focus on? I’ve got three pieces of advice and 10 different areas to choose from one at a time in the next blog! Let’s look at how to go about choosing your goals for the year:
1. Start Small and Build Momentum
If you aren’t sure where to start, start small and go from there. You can always add on to your goals. If you’d like to declutter the entire house, start with the laundry room first. If you would like to lose 50 pounds, start with 5 pounds for the month of February. If you’d like to exercise for 1 hour 5 days a week, start with 10 minutes and 2-3 days a week first before growing that goal. This method helps you see build confidence in your ability to follow through on the smaller goals and work your way up to the bigger ones. I will be the first one to tell you to set big and scary goals, but my advice will always be to start small. That’s what’s helped me get results in my own goal achievement journey. Building success in smaller goals will propel you to set and achieve the significantly bigger goals.
2. Be Flexible and Choose Curiosity over Criticism
When one thing doesn’t work, try something else. When you miss one day of workout, don’t cancel the next day’s workout. When you have a bad day, don’t make that into a bad month. If your rules for goals achievement don’t bend, they will break. You’ve got to remain flexible in this process, and you’ve got to choose curiosity over criticism. Curiosity invites you to the table to solve the problem and look at iit from a different lens. Criticism puts you in a corner and scolds you. Try this: “I wonder how I can make more time to work out this week.” Rather than, “there is no point in working out. I’ll never lose the weight.” Just a simple shift in the way you talk to yourself will make all the difference in the world. Give it a try. Be flexible and kind with yourself. Choose to be curious about your behavior and thought pattern rather than criticism yourself into quitting.
3. Make Goals Specific and Measurable as well as Time-bound
My Mindset Reset Course + Coaching goes into great detail over how to set specific goals and why make them measurable, but I just want to point out one important factor here, and that is if your goals are not specific and measurable, you will have not way of tracking what you are accomplishing. If you want to save $4000 for a cruise you want to take in December of 2024, you’ve got to divide that into 10 months and be intentional about saving $400 each month starting in February of 2024. If you say: I need to save some money to go on a cruise one of these years, you’ll never pursue that goal. It’s got to be specific, measurable and time-bound. Otherwise it’s not a goal.
Choosing any goals to pursue at any point in the year can be an empowering and ongoing process. You must remain flexible and curious to make forward momentum. Your goals are likely to evolve as you grow and evolve as an individual. Be open to this side of goal achievement, and embrace the journey. Most importantly, be kind to yourself on this journey. Nothing else matters more than you1
If this resonates with you, I’d love to invite you to take my Mindset Reset Course + Coaching and hit the reset button before you actually begin working on your goals.
