Process Negative Emotions

Why processing emotions are important and how to do it!

Hey friends! Welcome back to the blog!

Let’s talk about emotions and how to process them. When I first learned what it was to process emotions, I felt completely cheated in all the education I had ever received. How is it that in none of my classes all the up to graduate school not one lesson was taught on processing emotions! The truth is that might be your experience. This blog might be your first time learning about processing negative emotions, and it’s my pleasure to give you a brief look into this amazing tool. You ready? Let’s go!

Process Negative Emotions.

If coaching has taught me anything it’s that negative emotions aren’t there to scare us. They are there to tell us something, and they’ll stay in our body until we’ve processed them. I am actively learning to apply this concept to my life-on a daily basis!

Negative emotions are there to tell us something. They’ll stay in our bodies as long as it takes for us to listen to them and process them.

I am learning not to be afraid of fear, intimidation, uncertainty, dread, disappointment, shame, anger, sadness, and frustration. These emotions have the ability to scare us back into bed and force us to pull the covers over our heads.

In some areas of life, fear can have a stronger hold than in other areas. Shame appears much bigger in some areas of life. Scarcity shows up in some areas and not in others. Isn’t that strange and sort of amazing at the same time?! Also what I’ve found to be true is the minute we begin looking at negative emotions with curiosity, they begin to appear less intimidating and less scary. They begin losing their villain-like power over us.

Here is the basics of this process:

  1. Notice the negative emotion. Literally stop and turn your gaze inward. Name the emotion. If its anger, call it anger. Acknowledge it. If it’s shame, acknowledge it.
  2. Ask why it’s there and what it wants to tell you. If this is too hard to do at first, just do step 1. Sit and breath through it.

Start with these two steps and practice daily.

PRO TIP: Do this with negative AND positive emotions so your brain can get used to this process and finds it a safe practice.
