Dreading To-Do Lists?

3 simple tips to stop dreading your to-do list today!

Hey friends! Welcome back to the blog!

I hope you are well! Welcome to December and welcome to the month that’s FILLED with To-Do lists. Whether you celebrate all the holidays in November and December or not, this time of the year can be overwhelming to say the least.

If you are like me, and every other human, you probably dread doing some if not most of things on your To Do list. Here are 3 simple ways you can tackle the DREAD so you can check off all the things from your list.

1. Start Small and make it easy.

Choose the simplest task that takes the least amount of time to complete first. This can vary from person to person, but for me it’s folding the blankets on the couch and straightening things around the living-room. This immediately puts me in a better mood and gives me space to work better and think clearer. Another simple task for me is to put all dishes from the tables and counters and into the sink/sink area. This gives me an idea of what I need to wash and helps me think clearer. Finally, another simple task (for people with children like me), I take a basket and put all the toys that are in the living-room, dinning-room, etc, and put them in the basket. This immediately helps with the way the entire spaces looks. Later, I’ll task my children with putting things away. These three simple “mind clearing” tasks help me gain momentum.

From here, I’ll work on laundry, dishes, meals, etc. The same concept can be applied to your work tasks. What are simple and least time consuming things that you can do within 10-15 minutes that will create clarity for you? Start with them and go from there. I promise this works.

2. Set a Timer.

Want some fire under your behind? Set a time.

Want to set limits on how long you work on a task you dread? Set a timer.

Want to motivate yourself and compete with yourSELF? Set a timer.

Want to realistically figure out how long it takes you to do something? Set a timer.

Let’s focus on that last one for a minute. Often times my drama-filled mind wills say-It will take me forever to do —– or ——. The truth his that is a lie. It does not take forever. Setting at timer will answer that question truthfully. It takes me 10 minutes to empty the dishwasher and load another load of dirty dishes. It takes me 15 minutes to vacuum. It takes me 30 minutes to fold and put aways 3-4 baskets full of clean clothes for a family of 4 that includes two young kids who change clothes ALL the time!

So, friend, make a timer your best friend!

3. Re-frame your mindset.

Okay. Here we go! This is where your life coach (me) shines because we get to work on mindset work! Everything is in your mind, and let me explain why: When we think-It will take me forever to fold 4 baskets of clean clothes. That’s actually not true. You can actually say that to yourself in these words: Hey brain-You’re trippin’! It will take 30 minutes to fold and put away that entire mountain of clothes! Not forever!

Talking to your “dramatic teenager” brain is the same as talking to a teenager. You just have to reply with compassion and facts. That’s the best way to re-frame your thoughts.

“Hey! I get’s overwhelming. I don’t like folding and putting away so many things either. BUT I promise it will only take 30 minutes to fold and put everything away!

Re-framing your mindset takes practice and guidance and it’s something that can be done individually, of course, but working with a trained coach who can teach you the re-framing process from different angles can be incredibly valuable.
